Like most of the country, the casino industry has moved past the pandemic with record revenues in recent years, and Las Vegas has been a major part of that. However, one Las Vegas local casino interestingly remains closed and looks to stay that way for at least another year.
Boyd Gaming’s Eastside Cannery property has been closed for four years and the company recently extended a temporary closure for the property through March 2025, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
Locals Casino Sector Struggles
Boyd hasn’t commented on the property or what is planned, but the closure appears to coe as locals casinos lag behind the economic recovery found by properties catering to visitors. Boyd operates several locals properties, which usually include casinos as well as other options like movie theaters and bowling alleys, along with downtown Vegas casinos catering to a more general audience.
“The company’s Las Vegas locals segment, of which Eastside Cannery is a part, had a 2.2 percent decline in working cash flow in 2023 compared with 2022, according to unaudited operating results,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. “Executives told analysts in a February earnings call that the locals segment faced challenging comparisons because several quarters in 2022 were near-record or record-setting for the company, fueled by stimulus and revenge-spending post-pandemic.”
Signage at Eastside Cannery directs potential visitors to another company property, Sam’s Town, which is located about a half-mile away.
“Company executives have previously said they would monitor the submarket for upticks in demand before considering bringing it back online,” the Review-Journal noted.
