Maryland’s 10 retail and 10 mobile sportsbooks combined generated $4.6 million in tax payments for the state during May, the second-best single-month total to date. Each sportsbook contributes 15% of its taxable win to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs.
Marylanders wagered a total of $320 million on sports in the month of May, according to a monthly report released by Maryland Lottery and Gaming. The Mid-Atlantic state launched in-person retail sports betting at its five casinos in December 2021, followed by online/mobile betting in November 2022.
As expected, online/mobile wagering handles accounted for 95.3% of the total at $305,063,591. Mobile wagering delivered $4,439,703 in tax contributions to the state during May, while retail sportsbooks contributed $211,009.
Maryland’s sports wagering market also added a new mobile licensee recently. Fanatics Sportsbook conducted a controlled demonstration of their sports wagering service on May 30 and was issued a license to operate in the state on June 1. The license is held by Maryland Stadium Sub.
Fanatics became the 10th mobile sportsbook operator to launch in Maryland. The other nine are:

- Caesars Sportsbook MD (operator for CZR Maryland Mobile Opportunity/Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore)
- DraftKings (Crown MD Online Gaming)
- FanDuel (operator for PPE Maryland Mobile/Live! Casino and Hotel in Hanover)
- PointsBet (operator for Riverboat on the Potomac in Charles County)
Breaking down Mayland’s total $320 million wagered on sports in May, $305 million came from MD online betting with retail locations accounting for $15 million. That’s a drop from April’s total handle of $328 million as the market enters a slowdown in betting for the summer months.
Handle Winners in May
FanDuel Sportsbook reported the top mobile handle in May at $146 million. The sportsbook paid out $123 million in winnings to bettors.
Fanatics Sportsbook had the lowest handle from their initial testing in May reporting $9,479.73. A total of $2,555.32 was paid out to winning bets.
For retail locations, FanDuel at Live! Casino in Hanover handled $4.9 million in bets and paid out $4.4 million in winnings.
Greenmount Off-Track Betting in Hampstead reported the lowest handle for retail at $71,531.71, paying out $62,579.44 in winnings.

Since the inception of Maryland’s sports wagering program in December 2021, $25 million has been contributed to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund.
Under Maryland’s sports wagering law, the state’s Sports Wagering Application Review Commission is authorized to conduct a competitive process to award up to 60 mobile licenses and up to 30 Class B facility licenses.
